How to Choose a Guide or Charter

Whether  you’re spending a day on the water with a client, taking the kids fishing, learning more about a new lake, or preparing for a tournament, choosing the right guide for the job takes a little investigation time to create that perfect day.
Nothing could be more rewarding and memorable than a day on the water with a good guide. If you’re trying to impress a client there's no better place than being alone away from distractions. Unlike a golf course where most days end in frustration and rarely end on time, fishing with a client on the right lake with the right guide can create a memory and a bond like no other activity. If it’s a day on the water with your kids, catching fish all day even if they are pan fish keeps them from getting board and frustrated. Having someone to supply all the gear, untangle lines, choose the right bait and place is the key to a fun day they won’t forget.  Even if you have moved to a lake and want to know where to fish and what not to hit on the way is worth a day with a guide. Propeller damage and tow fees will cost much more than a guide for half the day.

Questions to Ask
The basic and minimal questions should be asked:
Do you have any references?  Every guide worth hiring should have a list of satisfied clients.
Are you a member of any associations?
Are you insured?
What equipment do you have?
What do I need to bring? A good guide will know how to set and meet expectations. If you have special requirements, tell them when booking. Tell them if you have a fear of rough water so they can plan for it. Nobody can predict the weather too far in advance so you might want to know what their policy is on rain checks.

No matter what your purpose for a day on the water, a good guide can be much less expensive, more enjoyable, and memorable. Time on the Water has listed some of the best guides in the province to help you have a great day.
